Nadia Odorico is a registered patent attorney and a principal of the specialist intellectual property firm, Griffith Hack. Nadia has been with Griffith Hack since 1996 after completing a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering at Monash University. Using her mechanical engineering background, Nadia drafts and prosecutes patents for a wide range of clients having inventions in diverse fields including medical devices, agricultural equipment, manufacturing processes, materials handling equipment to engine components and other machinery.

Nadia is a Fellow of the Institute of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys, and also a Senior Fellow of the Melbourne Law School at the University of Melbourne where she lectures in the subject of ‘Fundamentals of Patent Drafting’.

Nadia’s interest in the medical technologies industry has led her to join the Victorian branch of AusMedTech as a Committee Member. AusMedTech, a part of AusBiotech, is the national group representing the medical devices and diagnostic sector in Australia.

Nadia is also a member of Melbourne MS Angels, a group of women who meet to discuss issues pertinent to women in business and to raise funds to support research towards a cure for Multiple Sclerosis.

Michelle Gallaher is the CEO of the BioMelbourne Network. Michelle has over 20 years of experience in Victorian biotechnology and research organisations in a variety of roles building an extraordinary network of connections across many disciplines.

For the past 6 years, in her role at BioMelbourne Network, her job has been to facilitate the interconnectivity within the biotech industry and research sector in Melbourne. She often describes herself as a ‘super connector’ , admitting to knowing a little about everything, a lot about nothing but knowing exactly who to call on any given topic in biotech and life sciences.

She has hosted and led inbound and outbound trade delegations, generated and cultivated valuable links with similar biotech clusters around the world and advocated on behalf of the industry to local, state and commonwealth government.

Michelle is a champion for women in the biotech sector. Establishing and hosting the annual Connecting Women in Biotech Lunch in Melbourne each year for 450 women. She plays a central role in advising organisations on diversity and equity policies, and writes regularly on the topic on online fora.

Michelle has an undergraduate degree in allied health (Orthoptics) and postgraduate qualifications in business and marketing. She is a graduate member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) as well as a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management and a Patron of the Melbourne Theatre Company.

Margaret Hartley is the CEO of the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) since January 2009. The Academy delivers strategic policy advice on technological innovation solutions to address societal challenges facing Australia.

Margaret is on the Boards of Crawford Fund Limited and ACOLA Secretariat Limited. Her extensive career spanning some 23 years with the Australian Government including Principal Scientific Adviser, Department of Health and Ageing, Director, Office of Chemical Safety, and Director, NICNAS- Australia’s Chemical Regulator. Dr Hartley’s background is in regulatory toxicology, regulation reform policy and human health and safety policy. Margaret has wide experience in driving intergovernmental collaboration including through the World Health Organization, OECD and APEC. Prior to working with government, Margaret held positions in academia and research.

John McMorrow is actively involved in developing individuals and organisations through people development strategies for leadership, management and personal performance. With Leadership Management Australia (LMA) he provides his clients with a range of services to improve their Performance, Productivity and Profitability

Outside of work, he is involved in community service through Rotary International and Leadership Victoria. He has added to his technical skills with Marketing (RMIT) and Business Management qualifications (Monash) and holds an MBA from RMIT. John is a member of RMIT School of Management Research. He has been a mentor with Victoria Police and is now a mentor with RMIT and Monash Universities. He is also a Panel Member of the CPA Australia Global Strategy and Leadership Program.

Jürgen Schneider is Head of Market Development – Pacific and until recently was also Regional General Manager for Siemens Ltd in Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania which he had held for the past seven years.

In his current role, Jürgen is strategically involved in the business development across the four Business Sectors of Infrastructure & Cities, Industry, Energy and Healthcare. As Executive Sponsor he has a special focus on developing the Siemens Marine Defence portfolio.

Jürgen has previously managed a number of divisions within Siemens, holding the positions of Vice President of Industrial Solutions, Industrial Automation, Power Generation, Power Transmission and Distribution, and Transport Solutions. Jürgen has also performed strategic business development roles in the aluminium, oil and gas, metals and mining industries.

Jürgen has extensive multinational business and government relations experience in South Korea, Japan, Canada, the USA, Brazil, Singapore, India, the UK, France, Belgium and the Scandinavian countries. In his international management role, Jürgen established Siemens in New Zealand as a partner to Siemens in Australia and Siemens AG (Germany/Erlangen). Within Siemens AG, Jürgen also managed the Industrial Automation business division responsible for servicing the needs of a quarter of the German and European industrial markets.

Kees Eijkel is CEO of Kennispark Twente, the shell for commercialization in and around the University of Twente and Saxion University, in cooperation with the province of Overijssel and the city of Enschede on behalf of the cities in the region. As managing director of the University Holding, Kees manages the university’s participations. He has actively supported many new start-up firms. He holds a number of executive and non-executive positions in foundations and companies involved in innovation. He is board member and past president of the international Micro and Nano Commercialization Education Foundation MANCEF. Before Kennispark, Kees was technical-commercial director of the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology. He holds an M.Sc. in Mathematics from the University of Amsterdam and a Ph.D. in Technical Sciences from the University of Twente.

Keith McLean is the Research Theme Leader for Biomedical Materials and Devices in CSIRO’s Future Manufacturing Flagship. Working with a range of local and international companies the theme seeks to deliver economic and health impacts for Australia by developing new materials and devices for the biomedical sector. Current activities include materials for proliferation of stem cells for therapeutic application; fibre optic catheter technology and thermoresponsive polymers for drug delivery. McLean’s role includes science strategy and leadership; project, customer and people management; and business development. He serves on the Board of the CRC for Polymers and a number of other advisory boards.

Andrew Batty, Chief Executive Officer of Anatomics, has worked in the healthcare sector for 20 years commercialising medical devices, novel biotechnology and prescription medicines. Prior to Anatomics, Andrew has held a range of management roles with ‘start-up’ to ASX listed Biotech companies and the pharmaceutical multinationals, GSK and Roche. At Anatomics Andrew developed a local market, generated export sales in 20+ countries and executed agreements with large device companies. Andrew holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Commerce Degree with special interests in marketing, contract law and new product development. Andrew is 43 years old, married to Kristi and has four children.

David Austin is a lecturer, consultant and mentor with a particular focus on entrepreneurship and new venture creation. He has a passion for teaching, and for guiding emerging businesses to success. David’s ability to integrate the demands of operational effectiveness with a relentless search for innovation has enabled him to repeatedly deliver results throughout his career. David is an Associate Professor at the Melbourne Business School, lecturer to Melbourne University School of Engineering and is Managing Director of Bailey Austin Strategic Innovation Partners Pty Ltd.

Elaine Saunders is an award-winning audiologist and businesswoman with a background in research and commercialisation of Australian technology. She is Managing Director and Co-founder, Blamey Saunders hears, which supplies affordable, discrete and highly effective hearing aids through an innovative online telehealth service and clinic based in East Melbourne. She is former Chief Executive of Dynamic Hearing and Director of Alfred Health.   

Awards include the 2004 National Telstra Business Woman of the Year Award (Private & Corporate sector); American Academy of Audiology Award for Achievement in Industry (2010); Women in Leadership Asia’s Leading Woman in Healthcare (2011); Pearcey Award (Victoria) for Entrepreneurship in ICT (2011); City of Melbourne’s “Melbourne Award” for contribution to the community (2012) and AIRG medal for Technological Innovation (2013).

Peter Lewis, Director at Hydrix, is an accomplished senior executive with over 25 years’ experience leading growth strategies for technology based companies across global markets. Peter has deep hands-on experience across product development, investment, R&D, business development, innovation and international trade & investment. At Hydrix, a premier designer of medical devices and laboratory instrumentation, Peter is a member of the Board and leads business development for the company’s activities across Australia and internationally. 

Previously Peter held senior corporate business development roles with CSIRO and was the Senior Trade Commissioner and Consul-General for Australia based in Silicon Valley leading Austrade’s global Biotech and ICT trade strategies. Peter is an Electrical Engineer and has an MBA as well as undertaken executive courses at Stanford and INSEAD.

Philip Binns is Vice President and General Manager of the Spectroscopy Solutions Division within Agilent’s Chemical Analysis Group (formerly Varian Australia). Mr. Binns joined Varian’s Spectroscopy Division in 1994, after beginning his career in the mining and minerals industry. He has held management positions in product marketing and development, and sales and operations. In 2004, he was appointed General Manager of Varian’s field operations in the Pacific Rim.

In April 2010 Varian, Inc. was acquired by Agilent Technologies Inc. Mr Binns was appointed to the role of Vice President and General Manager of the Spectroscopy Solutions Division within the Agilent organisation, incorporating centers of excellence in R&D, Marketing and manufacturing in Australia, Japan and the USA.

In 2010 Mr. Binns was appointed by the Federal government to chair the Future Industry Innovation Council and in 2012 served on the Prime Minister’s Manufacturing Task Force. He is a member of The University of Melbourne’s Industry Advisory Group, Chairman of Bionic Enterprises, and is a National Councilor for the Australian Industry Group.

Rick Roush’s career spans research, teaching, and administrative appointments in both the USA and Australia. His regulatory service includes 4 Scientific Advisory Panels for the US EPA and 5 years for the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator, mostly on the Genetic Manipulation Advisory Committee. Rick has served as a consultant on safety issues on pesticides and genetic manipulated organisms for a range of companies including DuPont, Monsanto, Dow, Syngenta, and Bayer, and advised governmental agencies in China, India, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Since December 2006, Rick has been Dean of the School of Land and Environment at the University of Melbourne.

Sally McArthur is the Associate Dean of Research and Engagement and Professor of Biomedical Engineering in the Faculty of Science Engineering and Technology at Swinburne University of Technology.

Sally has obtained approximately $10M in funding from research councils, industry and government in the UK and Australia, including the $1.8M ARC Industrial Transformational Training Centre in Biodevices to be launched at Swinburne in mid-2014. Her research couples materials, surface engineering, physical science, analytical chemistry and biochemistry. Using these tools, she creates novel interfaces capable of eliciting specific physical and biological responses. These engineered surfaces enable the integration of biology into new technologies including microfluidics, biological and environmental sensors, tissue engineering and manufacturing processes.

Sally spent 6 years as a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer at the University of Sheffield in the UK after completing her Post-Doctoral Studies at the University of Washington in Seattle. She obtained her PhD from the University of New South Wales working with contact lens manufacturer Ciba Vision and CSIRO. She obtained her MEng Sci (Biomedical Engineering) and B.Eng (Materials Engineering) from Monash University.

Trish Messiter, Bachelor of Engineering from University of NSW, experience in research, engineering design, software technical support, marketing and sales. Career experience includes start-up through to corporate environments, entrepreneur, and industry award judge. Prior to Clarinox her work included engineering design for ICI and BHP; a Research Officer role at UNSW; technical support and client account management for IBM Australia; and engineering software sales, marketing and business development.

With that past 12 years as CEO of Clarinox, Trish has established expertise in short range wireless and embedded systems technologies, particularly Bluetooth and WiFi. Trish has provided presentations at major international conferences as well as local universities. Trish has co-authored academic works on the topic of embedded systems with RMIT.

Gavin Fox-Smith started his career at JJM in 1997 as a Regional Business Director responsible for the company’s account with Health Care of Australia, the precursor of Ramsay. Having developed his experience through several roles with JJM in Johnson logoSingapore, Sydney, Melbourne, in February 2012 Gavin was appointed the Managing Director of Johnson & Johnson Medical in Australia and New Zealand.

As founding director of Invetech, Alexander Gosling has been working in the field of process and product development and related R&D, for clients ranging from high tech start ups to “smoke-stack” industry global companies, for nearly 40 years. This has provided an exceptional base of practical experience on what it takes to progress new technologies to commercial success. He was part of the management team that led Invetech firstly to public listing (as Vision Systems Ltd) and then to its ac

Capstone logoquisition by the US Danaher group for over $800M. Alexander now divides his time between Invetech and Capstone, a firm that specialises in technology commercialisation and start-up ventures. He is an elected fellow of ATSE and an elected fellow of IEAust.

Elane Zelcer is an experienced and effective business leader in the biotechnology sector. She leads, manages and consults to medtech and biotech companies at various stages of product development. She has a successful track record from developing strategies to support industry partnering, business development and capital raising. Elane has successfully driven organisations that need change or start-up strategies involving significant risk management due to limited funding. She has experience in executive, board and advisory roles in the private sector, universities, CRCs and on State and Federal government committees. Elane is a Case Manager with the Commercialisation Australia program.

Ian Smith completed his first degree in Newcastle upon Tyne England and moved to Australia in 1984 to complete his PhD at Prince Henrys Institute Melbourne, enrolled through Monash University. Ian moved to the Baker Heart Research Institute in 1991 and was associate director there until his move to Monash University in 2004. In May 2011 Ian took up the position of Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research & Research Infrastructure) and as such he has responsibility for the oversight and management of the universities research infrastructure and technology platforms as well as developing and implementing strategies to meet future university infrastructure needs. He has published 230 papers including peer reviewed research papers in major international journals. His research has had a direct impact on human health and led to changes in clinical practice. Ian is a co-founder of a proteomics-based, publicly listed, biotechnology company and he continues to collaborate and consult widely with the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry. Ian serves on six international editorial boards and over the years he has held office-bearing positions in a number of national and international societies and has had an active involvement in the organisation of numerous national and international scientific meetings. Finally, he has held and continues to hold, a variety of national and international senior government and non-government advisory board/committee memberships with a focus on strategies for both research infrastructure development and forging stronger relationships between the academic and industry sectors.

Andrew Kings is CEO and Principal Architect at S2F with over twenty-five years experience across a range of architectural projects. Andrew has extensive knowledge in medical and pharmaceutical research, sterile manufacturing processes and equipment as well as many years experience in general domestic, commercial, and industrial architecture. Andrew’s key directorial role in all projects, ensuring a consistency in design and technical input make for an ideal chairman on the STC board.

Bruce Whan has been actively involved in innovation and commercialisation for over 20 years. He is the Director of Swinburne University of Technology’s commercialisation unit, Swinburne Knowledge, and is the CEO of Swinburne Ventures. He is also a Board Member for Commercialisation Australia. Bruce spent over 20 years at INNOVIC, the Victorian Innovation Centre Ltd, as both the Executive Director and Chairman, helping entrepreneurs, inventors and innovators achieve commercial success. He also has extensive experience in training and teaching. He was the General Manager, Training and Innovation for the Strategic Industry Research Foundation and has provided sessional teaching input on innovation and creativity to Swinburne’s Master of Entrepreneurship and Innovation program. Bruce’s experience includes research, technical, and management positions in both industry and universities.

Buzz Palmer is the CEO of STC Australia and a passionate technologist who enjoys mentoring early stage companies execute on their strategy and venture investment. Buzz is a dynamic business leader with a track record of entrepreneurial success in medical technologies and Biotech. Primarily, Buzz is focused on the translation of next-generation technologies, creating and leading innovative commercial and technology solutions into new markets.With experience from start-ups to large corporations across the EU, India, Arabian Gulf and Asia Pacific, he brings a global perspective on business, entrepreneurship, and product development.

Identifying opportunities and creating partnerships, Buzz has been involved in the design, development and delivery of numerous products. With a background in orthopaedic regenerative medicine and microsurgery, Buzz is ideally positioned to strategically drive innovative clinical technology solutions that provide a significant impact on society. In his spare time, Buzz enjoys a good game of rugby or cycling the beach roads of Melbourne.

Clive Davenport is a Director of the Small Technologies Cluster (STC) and a member of the Australian Government’s National Enabling Technologies Strategy (NETS) Council. He is also Director Emeritus of MANCEF, the global organisation focused on accelerating the commercialisation and uptake of small-scale technologies, serving as President from 2006 to 2012. In 2009 he was appointed Director of CSIRO’s National Future Manufacturing Flagship. He was previously the CEO of the CRC for microTechnology (2000-2006) and its spin-off businesses, a collaborative research initiative between industry, research and government. He was also an Executive Director of GBC Scientific Equipment (1982-1999) a company that grew from a start-up to an international success; exporting to over 80 countries and winning numerous Australian export, manufacturing and technology awards, including a prestigious international “R&D 100 Award”.

Clive has extensive experience in high technology industry from managing research programs, developing commercial products, establishing international markets, and taking start-up businesses to global success.

Erol Harvey is the co-founder and CEO of MiniFAB. Erol has successfully combined a distinguished academic career and entrepreneurial spirit.

With a PhD in Plasma and Laser Physics from Monash University, he spent time in Oxford, UK before returning to Australia in 1999 to become Professor of Microtechnology at Swinburne University specialising in microfluidics, polymer microengineering and packaging.

His team was the seed for the subsequent formation of the CRC for MicroTechnology, a AUD$75M vehicle that brought together Australian academia and industry, attracting such names as Cochlear Ltd, Robert Bosch Australia, and the Australian Institute of Sports.

In 2002, together with Michael Wilkinson, he founded MiniFAB. Erol has served on a number of local and federal Australian government committees, international program review panels and in 2006 Erol was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE).

Graeme Bullock is an experienced senior manager of technology development businesses. He is a Member of the Institute of Engineers and has more than 30 years experience in:

  • Development of sophisticated technical products for international firms
  • Commercialisation of Australian research
  • International marketing of new technologies
  • Management of fast-growth high-technology companies.

He has worked for technology firms in Director of Engineering and Marketing roles, as well as the General Manager of Melbourne University’s Technology Commercialisation office and Manager of an advisory service with the Australian Institute for Commercialisation

Graeme is currently a consultant providing technical and strategic advice to a range of Australian clients who are undertaking technology development projects.

Laura Faulconer joined STC in 2012. Laura has a background in accelerating commercialization of emerging technologies, market intelligence, and translational research. In her role at STC, Laura is building new programs to grow the emerging technology sector in Australia. She works closely with cluster companies to listen to their needs and help them with their challenges. Laura received her PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a BS in Forensic Science from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Michael Wilkinson was one of the driving forces behind the set-up of STC and since then has remained actively involved in developing and growing the organisation. In his role at STC, Michael liases with both Federal and State Governments, universities and industry. Through his involvement with STC, Michael helped to establish the South East Melbourne Innovation Precinct (SEMIP). Michael was integral in STC’s successful bid to manage the Victorian Government’s Small Technology Industry Uptake Program (STIUP) that has since evolved into the Technical Voucher Program (TVP).

Michael is the Founder and Managing Director of Wilkore Pty Ltd, a construction company that specialises in the design and construction of controlled environment facilities and laboratories. He is also a founding investor and Chairman of the Board of MiniFAB, a contract engineering firm that provides customized polymer microfluidic solutions for clients across a range of industries, with particular expertise in the diagnostics and medical device sectors.

Nairy Baghdikian is a Director of Cogentum, an innovation and strategic marketing consultancy that brings a market and customer orientation to high technology industries. Nairy’s practice focuses on leveraging customer and market insights to drive innovation strategy and optimise the ROI on new product development and commercialisation. Nairy has held strategic marketing roles in both product and service oriented global organisations as well as lecturing in and researching innovation for over 12 years across Monash and RMIT universities. Nairy has been consulting in the innovation space for over a decade and has a special interest in improving the success rate of high technology innovations.

Geoff Rogers is an experienced mechanical engineer, with a PhD in micro/nanotechnology, and is the inventor of the IntelliWireTM. His area of expertise is micro/nano sensing and actuation, and he has won numerous awards for his achievements in engineering and innovation. Geoff has published a number of articles in high-ranking international journals, and has also been a member of many boards and committees relating to engineering, intellectual property and commercialisation.
